As you all know I left Brisbane on Thursday. It’s about a 13 hour flight to LA. It was a little interesting. Let’s just say the airline didn’t have the best day. There were problems with the entertainment system and then the toilets all started to systematically shut down…definitely not ideal on a flight that long…
We were just past Hawaii when the Captain decided to push on to LA rather than return to Hawaii. We were also down to four toilets, all at the back of the plane…there were a few announcements recommending we limit our liquid intake…yep good idea.
I then had a four hour layover until my flight. That was a tough four hours—trying to stay awake. I hadn’t managed to sleep on the way from Brisbane to LA. The next flight from LA to Houston was great and I got to fly in a Dreamliner 787 First Class… NICE!!!!
By the time I got to the Hotel at 6.30pm I was well and truly exhausted and all I wanted was some real food, a shower and sleep. Eight hours later I woke up on Houston time. (I haven’t suffered from Jet lag at all…touch wood!)
I met up with the lovely Cassy Roop in the lobby of the hotel the next morning. We got chatting and decided to explore a little. So out we went to check out the surrounding area. The Woodlands is an immaculately groomed integrated living community. We’ll I’m not sure if that’s what they call it but that’s how I perceive it to be. We found a very high end shopping mall a few streets over and went for a wander around there. They didn’t open until ten. That’s another weird thing…the sun was barely up until 8.00am??? Weird for a Gold Coast girl.
I finally got to meet Tamia Simons in person. She arrived around 12:00 and immediately bustled me off for lunch. There was lots of hugging and squealing first! We went to a Mexican place and the food was great. The waiter was too! (we posted a little video of this in Gayleforce in case you missed it!). Then we spent the afternoon hanging out and checking out the sites. Including my brush with the law. Wow that guy was seriously tall. He wanted to know if I knew where Townsville was…ah yeah I do. I think he was surprised.
We then met up with Sylvia Bull and her mother Mary. These ladies are absolutely delightful and made me feel like part of their family. Tamia, Sylvia, Mary and I had a lovely catch up over dinner then Tamia and I went in search of some dance music…LOL well maybe Houston doesn’t dance! The DJ certainly wasn’t encouraging it at the bar we went to. We were in the mood to make friends and we kind of ended up helping three other ladies celebrate a 40th birthday. And strangely enough Tamia, got talking to another lady that was just about to review Brave in her book club. Nope she wasn’t in town for BBIT either. So that created lots of squealing and photos!
What a great day! The whole day was super relaxed and lots of fun. We had two hours to set up and I did have three of the most awesome helpers. Tamia, Sylvia and Mary. Tamia is an accountant so she was all over getting the sales and stuff sorted. Sylvia and Mary are specialist Girl Scout mums and it showed. In minutes the whole table was organised and everything ran like clockwork. Truth be told, I was probably in the way! (thanks ladies—you’re the best!)
I had the pleasure of meeting many new readers and chatting to them. I met a few ladies from Vegas that I’ll get to see at RT which was quite unexpected. Everyone in Texas is very friendly and hugely polite. It’s actually really refreshing. The organisers did a great job and the event ran really well. The room was huge and so were the tables—I guess everything really is bigger in Texas.
After the signing, Sylvia and Mary took me out for a “real” Texas dinner. It was great. I’m a huge carnivore and the steak and ribs were spot on. Yep, Texas definitely suits this Aussie.
This morning I had a little wander around, now I’m going to try and get a few words down before jumping on a plan to Vegas. Can’t wait to see who I meet there.
I’ll keep you posted. 😉
